I think this comment might reflect back to a statement by Mark Twain in the introduction to "Those Extraordinary Twins" where he describes his process as "jackleg" as he discusses the process of writing his twin novels of "Puddn'head Wilson" and "Those Extraordinary Twins."
"Would the reader care to know something about the story which I pulled out? He has been told many a time how the born-and-trained novelist works. Won't he let me round and complete his knowledge by telling him how the jack-leg does it?"
